Yellowdock is in the knotweed family that is referred to as a wayside herb, meaning it sprouts in undisturbed and unlikely places where many other plants won’t. The root has been used as a laxative, astringent, tonic, blood purifier, and alternative since it was first recognized as a medicinal plant. Yellowdock was employed by European herbalists as a “cordial to the heart,” a bitter tonic appetizer, and a cooling agent for fevers. The yellow taproot is harvested to make tinctures for internal use and infusions for topical use.
